Newcastle train Wi-Fi specialist Nomad Digital sees turnover rise to £42m

Nomad Digital, the train Wi-Fi specialist has announced that its turnover has reached £42m following global contract wins in new and existing markets.

The Newcastle-based business has grown rapidly since it was established 14 years ago and is now the leading provider of passenger and fleet connectivity solutions to the railway industry.

The group provides Wi-Fi on trains and also develops and delivers other wireless-on-board connectivity solutions, for the rail and bus sectors.

With approximately 219 people across the group, Nomad Digital now counts Heathrow Express, Virgin Trains, Amtrak and Queensland Rail among its clients.

Latest accounts for the firm’s holding company, for the year ended June 30 2015, show an impressive 47% increase in turnover, from £29.09m to £42.6m, following the strong year. Positive EBITDA of £959,000 was also reported, a reversal of last year’s negative EBITDA of £1.4m. Sales in Europe also rose considerably, from £7.8m to £12.8m.

Meanwbeamhile, the previous year’s operating loss of £7.07m has shortened to £2.8m. In a strategic report the firm said strong progress had been made during the year.

“The group continued to make good progress, delivering and winning contracts in the USA, Canada, Australia, Germany, the Netherlands and Poland, as well as the UK.

“Subsequent to the year end the group saw continued success in both its existing markets as well as securing significant new orders with customers in Austria and Spain.

“In addition, the group’s operation and maintenance department continues to grow and support the continues success of the sales and delivery teams as the fleet of vehicles covered continues to expand.”

Nomad Digital was also listed again in the Kiscox Sunday Times Tech Track and selection in the UK Future Fifty cohort.

Looking ahead, the firm said it will look at new services it can offer the transport sector.

Directors concluded: “The company will continue to develop and enhance its solution offerings, as it seeks to penetrate new and growing markets, as well as maintain its significant leadership in well-established territories.”
