Durham tech firm Kromek wins two national innovation awards

North East technology company Kromek has won its second – and third – national awards this month after taking two prizes at the IET Innovation Awards.

Just a week after taking the Tech Achievement of the Year at the UK Tech Awards, the Sedgefield-based firm won the Intelligent Systems and Navigation and Surveillance Communications categories at the Innovation Awards held by the the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET).

Kromek, a spin-out of Durham University, received both awards for its networked radiation detection solution, a smartphone-sized D3S developed to defend against nuclear terrorism.

The devices were developed with the US Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), an agency of the US Department of Defense, with a large-scale test deployment of the detectors planned for Washington DC ahead of a wider roll-out across the US.

Kromek CEO Arnab Basu said: “We’re delighted to have received not just one, but two awards from such a prestigious institution as the IET for our innovative solution to combat modern security threats.

“I’d like to thank everyone at Kromek for their contribution towards us receiving this fantastic recognition from our peer group and industry experts, which is a reflection of the ability and commitment of our world-class team.”
