Openreach has announced that more than 135,000 homes and businesses across Greater Manchester can now access some of the fastest, most reliable broadband anywhere in the UK.<\/p>\n
As designated key workers, Openreach engineers have been hard at work throughout the Covid-19 lockdown, building the new network that uses the latest Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband technology \u2013 where fibre optic cables are laid all the way from the local telephone exchange to people\u2019s front doors.
\nThe new technology is \u2018live\u2019 in parts of all ten of the metropolitan boroughs of Salford, Bury, Oldham, Bolton, Bury, Tameside, Trafford, Rochdale, Wigan and Stockport \u2013 with many homes and businesses now able to order an upgrade. And in the coming months, more will be upgraded as engineers continue building the infrastructure and installing the cables required to connect those areas.
\nRobert Thorburn, Openreach\u2019s Regional Partnership Director in the North, said: \u201cWe\u2019re making great progress here in Greater Manchester and our full fibre build has continued despite the obvious challenges. As well as keeping the existing network running, our engineers have continued building the new infrastructure to make sure that as lockdown restrictions ease, our network is there to support families, businesses and the economic recovery.
\n\u201cI\u2019d encourage everyone who can to switch to the new technology and take advantage of the many benefits. \u2018Full fibre\u2019 is more reliable and more resilient meaning fewer faults and more predictable, consistent speeds. It is also \u2018future-proof\u2019 to easily meet the growing data demands of future technologies.\u201d
\nRecent research suggests the network could bring clear economic benefits as Greater Manchester looks to bounce back from the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n
A report by the Centre for Economics & Business Research (Cebr) shows that connecting everyone in the North West to \u2018full fibre\u2019 broadband would create a \u00a35.5 billion boost to the local economy, by unlocking smarter ways of working, better public services and greater opportunities for the next-generation of home-grown businesses. The report also revealed that 54,000 people in the region could be brought back into the workforce through enhanced connectivity \u2013 including in small businesses and through entrepreneurship.
\nCouncillor Sean Fielding, Greater Manchester Combined Authority Lead for Employment, Skills and Digital, said: \u201cThis is fantastic news for Greater Manchester. Full Fibre will supercharge our digital capacity. This future-proofed connectivity supports the work we are doing in Greater Manchester to make public sector services more efficient.<\/p>\n

Across the North West, Openreach employs around 3,550 people to build and maintain its phone and broadband network and, in September last year, invested \u00a31.7 million in a new fibre training centre in Bolton.<\/p>\n
Engineers trained in Bolton will play a vital role supporting Openreach\u2019s recently expanded national plans to make FTTP technology available to 4.5 million homes and businesses across the UK by the end of March 2021 \u2013 an increase of more than 500,000 premises. And by the mid-to-late 2020s Openreach want to reach 20 million premises \u2013 almost two thirds of the UK \u2013 assuming the right conditions to invest are in place.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
