A government-backed programme designed to accelerate digital transformation in manufacturing has achieved a significant milestone in the North West of England. Made Smarter has now supported its 400th technology project in the region, with an additional 25 businesses recently receiving grants to invest in digital tools and systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Over the past seven years, this industry-led initiative has channelled \u00a37.4 million in matched funding into the manufacturing sector, unlocking a substantial \u00a326 million of private investment in cutting-edge technologies such as sensors, robotics, 3D printing, and artificial intelligence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Organisers predict this investment will provide a transformative boost to the regional economy, with an expected 1,850 new jobs created, over 3,300 workers upskilled, and a projected \u00a3276 million economic uplift over the next three years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Donna Edwards, Programme Director at Made Smarter, said: \u201cReaching our 400th funded technology project is a proud milestone for Made Smarter and a powerful demonstration of what manufacturers in the North West can achieve with the right support. Over the last seven years, we\u2019ve seen hundreds of SMEs take confident steps towards digitalisation, boosting productivity, creating jobs, and laying the groundwork for long-term growth. What excites me most is that this is just the beginning.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The latest group of manufacturers to receive support spans across Cumbria, Lancashire, Liverpool City Region, Greater Manchester, and Cheshire and Warrington. These businesses represent a diverse range of sectors, from high-end joinery and sustainable clothing to electronics, food tech, and safety testing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In Cumbria, Brampton-based Creative Joinery + Design is implementing large-format 3D printing to enhance production and support rapid prototyping. Co-owners Peter and Christopher Johnson commented: \u201cThe impact on our business is huge. It increases our production capacity, gives us the confidence to explore new markets, and will support the creation of new jobs.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Meanwhile, in Lancashire, Reverse Engineering North West Limited in Preston is bringing a key process in-house through CNC fibre laser cutting. Managing Director Paul Bimpson stated: \u201cThis move will not only strengthen our capabilities, but also generate up to five new skilled jobs here in Preston, securing our growth for the future.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In Liverpool, H Miller Bros credited Made Smarter with providing the confidence to make transformative changes. Director Howard Miller described the advice as \u201cdetailed and bespoke,\u201d adding: \u201cIt completely transformed our business.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Across Greater Manchester, companies such as Blazing Limited, The Bubble Panda, and Steely Products have all benefited. Mohammad Idrees, MD of Blazing Limited in Bolton, said: \u201cIts contribution towards our investment in automation is a pivotal step in our growth journey.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And in Cheshire, The Eclectic Lifestyle Company in Chester highlighted the people-centred nature of the support. Owner John Pattinson explained: \u201cTechnology is a catalyst for our ambitions, but it\u2019s our people\u2026 who are driving this change.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
