OVHcloud, a London-based web hosting cloud provider, has announced the launch of its new Environmental Impact Tracker, a tool designed to enable enterprises to precisely monitor their carbon footprint and reduce cloud wastage. The firm describes this as an “enhanced version” of its existing carbon calculator, promising customers more detailed insights into the environmental impact of their cloud usage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The new tool will allow users to track carbon emissions across an expanded range of services, including bare-metal, hosted private cloud services, and public cloud compute products. This comprehensive tracking will provide insights into Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions, covering the entire lifecycle “from the manufacturing phase to the operation of the infrastructure,” alongside a detailed lifecycle analysis for hardware and components.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

OVHcloud has also indicated that plans are underway to extend the tracker’s capabilities to public cloud storage and web hosting services, though an exact timeline for their availability was not specified.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gr\u00e9gory Lebourg, Global Environmental Director at OVHcloud, stated that the launch of the tracker builds on the provider\u2019s long-standing efforts to drive sustainability within the cloud computing industry. Earlier this year, the company was notably ranked among the top companies in its sector in the Corporate Sustainability Assessment conducted by S&P Global Ratings, underscoring its commitment to environmental responsibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said: \u201cIn a world where every action counts, accurately and transparently\u00a0assessing your environmental footprint<\/a>\u00a0is no longer an option – it’s a responsibility. As a committed player, we support our customers in understanding and controlling their impact. That’s why we’re continually improving our Environmental Impact Tracker, a true market benchmark.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

OVHcloud’s new Environmental Impact Tracker is designed to simplify carbon emissions tracking for businesses by providing detailed insights from “two angles.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first of these focuses on the “usage phase,” using average emissions factors in a customer\u2019s country, alongside data from the company’s own electricity suppliers. This provides a more granular and accurate picture of a customer’s real-time environmental impact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Secondly, the firm will also incorporate factors such as the reconditioning of components during server assembly. OVHcloud believes that by doing so, it will give its customers a much more comprehensive understanding of their carbon footprint across their entire supply chain and infrastructure lifecycles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Looking ahead, the cloud provider has plans to incorporate other key metrics into the tool for even more granular insights, including information on water consumption rates, abiotic resources, and the impact of land use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Environmental Impact Tracker is currently available to all of OVHcloud\u2019s customers globally, with the sole exception of the United States.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
