Cutting-edge digital labs revealed at Newcastle college university centre

Newcastle College is commemorating the inauguration of two specialized digital laboratories. With a focus on cyber security and immersive technology, these cutting-edge facilities are envisioned to empower students to tap into the flourishing tech sector.

Comprising a cyber lab and an immersive technology lab, these digital facilities mark the inaugural phase of the new higher education amenities, made possible by the £6 million grant awarded earlier this year by the Office for Students (OfS). These labs will be housed within the Newcastle College University Centre (NCUC), the institution’s higher education wing.

The timing of this unveiling is particularly opportune, coinciding with the announcement that the North East region has been designated as the Digital Technologies Launchpad. This initiative, one of eight regional clusters appointed by the government, designates each as a launchpad for a distinct sphere of innovation. As a part of this endeavor, the North East will benefit from a portion of the £75 million investment from the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology.

The Launchpad initiative aims to establish globally connected innovation clusters, poised to lead the world and stimulate enhanced employment, economic prosperity, and productivity in these regions.

Jon Ridley, deputy principal (HE) at Newcastle College said: “We are committed to giving our students the higher technical skills needed to succeed now and in the future. We invest in facilities, kit and equipment so the cyber security architects, analysts and engineers of tomorrow can refine their skills and explore ideas. NCUC graduates are work ready and that can only be a good thing for a thriving region and beyond.”

The cyber labs boast top-of-the-line equipment featuring the latest Cisco networking kits. Students have the opportunity to engage in hands-on, practical sessions utilizing industry-standard tools. These labs are entirely off-network, establishing a secure ‘sandbox’ for students to delve into ethical hacking practices and develop essential skills for digital roles.

In the immersive labs, high-end computers are complemented by an expansive environment where students can leverage VR, AR, and XR equipment. Additionally, the labs are equipped with state-of-the-art full-body and facial motion capture suits.

Networking and Cyber Security student Lucy Hall has been using the cyber labs this term. She said: “The new facilities are great. I’m getting to enhance my knowledge by putting it straight into practice with this bespoke equipment. I feel like it’s really going to help when I go into industry.”
