Sheffield-based creative technology business Cultura Creative has completed an international photography project across six countries and 11 cities to compile a dataset of imagery for artificial intelligence and machine learning training.
The Kelham Island company coordinated the three-month production from its headquarters, producing more than 400,000 visual assets. The commission aimed to generate representative visual data to reduce algorithmic bias and assist AI systems in recognising diverse populations and environments.
The production involved documented permissions, informed participation protocols, and structured shoots across international locations. Founded by Sheffield-born entrepreneur Christina Vaughan, who previously established global image agency Image Source, Cultura Creative focuses on developing ethical dataset frameworks for machine learning applications.
In a recent sector development, Sheffield-based data centre cooling company Iceotope secured capital backing to support infrastructure scaling for high-density artificial intelligence computing across global markets. This regional expansion in AI physical infrastructure complements the growing operational focus on software data models within South Yorkshire’s technology sector.
Christina said: “Artificial intelligence is only ever as good as the data it learns from. If that data isn’t representative of society, AI systems can unintentionally reinforce bias and exclusion. South Yorkshire has the talent, universities and entrepreneurial spirit to become a globally recognised centre for ethical AI innovation. We’re proving that world-class AI infrastructure doesn’t have to be built in Silicon Valley – it can be created here in Sheffield while working with partners across the world.”
