Cambridge Enterprise, the tech transfer office for the University of Cambridge, is set to open its first-ever London office, in King’s Cross. The move is a strategic bid to strengthen collaborations and expand its influence among global investors and innovators, with the King’s Cross location prime, placing Cambridge Enterprise right next to the European headquarters of major tech firms like Google.
As the commercialisation arm of the university, Cambridge Enterprise is responsible for helping researchers and academics turn their groundbreaking work into successful startup businesses. The organisation believes that having a physical presence in the capital will help bridge the gap between the two leading UK tech hubs, encouraging a more seamless flow of talent and investment.
Jim Glasheen, Chief Executive of Cambridge Enterprise, commented: “Our new London office represents a strategic investment in Cambridge innovation and entrepreneurialism. By establishing this base in King’s Cross, we aim to increase engagement with national and international players, from investors to partners, whilst creating new pathways for our most promising spinouts. Cambridge academics and researchers are solving some of the world’s most pressing challenges and this expansion will ensure their breakthroughs can more rapidly reach those who need them most.”
Cambridge has cemented its position as one of the UK’s most successful technology hubs, second only to London. According to research from Beauhurst, the University of Cambridge is the country’s most prolific producer of spinout companies. Last year marked the city’s second-best year on record for venture capital investment, with Cambridge-based firms raising a staggering £1.7 billion in 2024, according to research from Dealroom and Founders at the University of Cambridge.
