Volklec a new EV battery maker launches in the West Midlands
Volklec, a new electric vehicle battery manufacturer, has officially launched its operations in the UK. The company is based in Coventry, West Midlands, and is supported by the UK-based investment company Frontive Group. Volklec’s mission is to power electrified mobility for various types of vehicles, including on-road, off-highway, and track vehicles.
Volklec’s battery manufacturing efforts are in collaboration with the UK Battery Industrialisation Centre (UKBIC), a national facility dedicated to scaling up manufacturing processes and providing essential skills for the growing EV battery sector. This partnership is critical to meeting the bespoke requirements of the UK automotive market, particularly for small-volume and niche vehicle manufacturers.
Volklec’s product development strategy is focused on rapid scalability, which is a crucial component of the roadmap to giga-scale production. By working closely with UKBIC, Volklec aims to develop and refine battery technologies that can be scaled efficiently to meet the increasing demands of the electric vehicle market. This initiative is expected to directly create jobs in the West Midlands, boosting the local economy and contributing to the UK’s position as a leader in battery research and manufacturing.
The collaboration between Volklec and UKBIC is set to generate employment opportunities in the West Midlands, fostering the development of world-class battery research and manufacturing capabilities. This effort will not only support the local workforce but also enhance the UK’s overall competency in the electric vehicle sector.
Volklec’s launch marks a significant step forward in the UK’s journey towards sustainable and electrified mobility. With the backing of Frontive Group and the strategic partnership with UKBIC, Volklec is poised to become a pivotal player in the electric vehicle battery manufacturing industry, driving innovation and efficiency in the market.
Imran Khatri, Volklec founder, said: “Volklec has been many months and significant investment in the making, established to help the UK’s decarbonisation drive. As a proud investment in the UK, our initial focus is on the automotive industry, providing security of supply to the sector, then we intend to look at the broader electrification markets as well.”
Sean Gilgunn, UKBIC managing director, commented: “This agreement marks the start of Volklec’s journey to create a battery with the potential to scale up to significant volumes in the coming years, and we are proud to support the business in the initial phase of their development. Manufacturing cells at volume is vital to ensuring the UK prospers from the energy transition towards Net Zero, and this agreement further demonstrates the unique value of UKBIC to the battery ecosystem.”
