Bristol-headquartered communications technology provider Smartbox has completed its third acquisition in six weeks with the swoop for German eye-tracking assistive technology business GazeFirst.

The move will lead to the creation of a new ‘eye gaze’ division at Smartbox Group, which currently employs 700 people globally. GazeFirst, established in 2023 and based in Frankfurt, is known for its flagship product, the eyetuitive camera, which stands as one of the pioneering AI-powered eye gaze solutions available on the market.

Smartbox stated that the technology offers intuitive calibration and cross-platform compatibility. The company also highlighted the significant potential for continuous development of the camera’s features and performance to align with the evolving needs of individuals who use Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC).

Dougal Hawes, group CEO at Smartbox, remarked: “This is a huge moment for the Smartbox family. We’ve been using eye gaze technology since 2006 and have seen the life-changing impact it can have – empowering people to access their AAC devices and communicate independently.”

He added: “Now, with an AI-powered solution that we’ll design and develop in-house, we’re taking the next step. This innovation will help us deliver the most intuitive, responsive, and empowering eye gaze experience yet – directly supporting our mission to give everyone a voice.”

This latest acquisition follows Smartbox’s recent purchase of Australian business Zyteq last week, alongside the earlier snapping up of UK firm ATTherapy more than five weeks ago.
